1952, Dir. Stanley Donen and Gene Kelly
This is what a perfect musical should be. Is there any musical as infectious and fun as this? Energetic numbers, a sweet love story, bright colors, and the hilarious Jean Hagen flow together for a wonderful tale of Hollywood’s transition from the silents to talkies. There’s a reason why this is the standard for musical films and it’s because it tells a great story. Also, the grand finale with Cyd Charisse will make you rewind over and over again. If you have a friend who doesn’t ‘get’ musicals, show them this one.
